Penalva is certainly one of the first Dão areas where the Jaen grape variety appeared, if not the first, since the Order of Santiago owned properties in Penalva do Castelo for centuries, especially in Mareco, eastern limit of Quinta da Boavista, where you can still find the ruins of the ancient Order of Santiago Farm House.
It is said that it was the Friars of the Order of Santiago who spread Jaen to these lands, from Bierzo, where it originates and is designated by Tinta Mencia.
With the aim of preserving the legacy left by the Friars of the Order of Santiago, the current owners of Quinta da Boavista have kept high-quality parameters in the production of the wine and in all the others activities of the Estate.
